Release 2.0 of the 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR)

Overview
Release 2.0 of the 7705 SAR brings significant, feature-rich routing and signaling capability enhancements to the 7705 SAR family. The strategy of leveraging the functionality of the industry-leading Service Router operating system (SR-OS) is proving highly effective in strengthening the 7705 SAR product line in its principal roles, such as radio access network (RAN) aggregation and backhaul, and also broadening its utility in other application areas such as TDM to packet (private line infrastructure modernization) and specifically vertical market applications.
The principal items being launched are:

  • Significant Routing and Signaling Enhancements: These enhancements are targeted at boosting resiliency and efficiency, especially in multi-stage, high capacity aggregation networks. As the 7705 SAR becomes a fully fledged Label Switched Router (LSR) delivering FRR, RSVP-TE, OSPF and BFD features, new scalable and resilient network designs become possible. For example, resilient ring architectures increase the value proposition for vertical market opportunities (e.g. utility deployments) and also for many mobile backhaul scenarios.  Redundant pseudowires allow a network solution to be deployed that is resilient to link or node failures even at the highest points of concentration.
  • IP Pseudowires: The availability of IP pseudowires or” iPipes” allows the media-independent transfer of IP traffic, for example,  between a ML-PPP attachment point and an ethernet connection.
  • 7705 SAR-8 environmental enhancements: Bringing a +24V power option and temperature hardening to the 7705 SAR-8 platform extends its applicability (and hence its addressable market) to a greater number of more remote site installations.
  • 4 port OC-3/STM-1 clear channel adapter card: This clear channel adapter card supports ATM access in R2.0 (with POS scheduled for the next release) allowing higher capacity ATM networking in different applications.

Other items that are part of this release include: a certified AC power solution and an integrated DS3 point to point trunk capability via a small form factor pluggable (SFP) device.

Customers with strong interest in this release include many of our vertical market customers.

Significant Routing and Signaling Enhancements

These enhancements boost both resiliency and traffic engineering efficiency in aggregation networks. Resiliency enhances network uptime which is critical to many customers. Traffic engineering can improve the utilization of network resources , reducing operating costs

IP Pseudowires

Efficiently transporting IP traffic between different access media allows the use of ethernet media in the backhaul network and the achievement of statistical gain.

7705 SAR-8 environmental enhancements

The 7705 SAR-8 can now be deployed in more demanding environments, at the edge of the network for example. This allows the scale and resiliency of the 7705 SAR-8 to be leveraged in unconditioned sites.

4port OC-3/STM-1 clear channel adapter card

ATM aggregation for broadband traffic can be delivered in a compact form factor, modern IP/MPLS platform.

Differentiation with our approach

networks over IP/MPLS are growing – a multi-stage concentration approach is needed with traffic engineering for efficient and resilient operation.

The 7705 SAR with R2.0 brings a fully fledged LSR capability, including RSVP, with redundant pseudowires.

The solution leverages mature and feature-rich software modules from the best in class SR-OS.  This brings field tested and hardened capability plus end-to-end consistency of implementation and management.

IP traffic in remote branches is often delivered over T1/E1 ML-PPP access.

Efficiently transporting IP traffic between the ML-PPP access point to an Ethernet or GE hand off in the central site.

Resiliency mechanisms, 5620 SAM management tools and QoS capabilities combine to provide a powerful and independently proven IP/MPLS infrastructure.

  •

Many sites at the edge of the network are not temperature conditioned and also have only a +24V DC power feed.

Bringing a +24V power option and temperature hardening to the 7705 SAR-8 platform.

7705 SARA scalable, resilient platform with fully redundant control and switch modules that can be used in the smaller sites at the network edge.

ATM aggregation networks need higher bandwidth clear channel UNI connectivity.

4port OC-3/STM-1 ATM/POS card.

ATM aggregation for broadband traffic is delivered in a compact form factor, modern IP/MPLS platform. Four OC-3/STM-1 clear channel ports in a half width adapter card.
