1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS)

Alcatel-Lucent Optics is planning the launch of the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) with the Channel Partner Program in the third quarter of 2009. Details of the launch plan will be provided in the next edition of the Partner Update Newsletter.

About the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS)

The 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) is Alcatel-Lucent’s new generation WDM platform, providing the industry-first photonic switching solution for flexible and automated WDM networking. Building on its unique Zero-Touch Photonics technology - which enables easier operations for reduced costs and accelerated time to market for wavelength services - the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS is poised to meet the new requirements for a next-generation photonic network - beyond what is available today with ROADM technology - able to mimic the flexibility, automation and fast time-to-service capabilities of electrical-based transport networks.
The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS enables the following key benefits:

  • Reduced operating expenses, by making WDM networking more flexible, automated, simpler and quicker to operate by facilitated NOC-based services avoiding on-site manual interventions
  • Accelerated time to market for wavelength services that can be set in minutes by a NOC without lengthy and costly on-site intervention
  • Increased revenue generation for wavelength services as high automation reduces service time-granularity and paves the way for a new breed of on-demand wavelength service offerings, reusing the same bandwidth resource multiple times
  • Improved capacity by adding "any-wavelength-to-anywhere" for significant savings in Capex to cost-effectively accommodate traffic growth
  • Significant savings in space and power per transported bit

1830 PSS marquee features:

  • High-density multiplexer/demultiplexer (mux/demux) per network element (NE)/degree
  • Wavelength Tracker monitors and traces each wavelength at any point in the network
  • Static, tunable/reconfigurable optical add/ drop multiplexer (T/ROADM) with single-wavelength add/drop granularity
  • Up to 44 wavelengths 100 GHz ITU WDM per fiber pair
  • Support for the full range of network topologies, including ring, point-to-point and arbitrary optical mesh topologies
  • Cost-effective gain equalization of individual wavelengths and Forward Error Correction (FEC) technology for improved system performance, eliminating the need for costly regeneration in metro applications
