China, oriental Turkestan. 1995
On the road between Kashgar and Pamir mountains.
Lakes spread up to 3 600 meters high between the top of the Pamir, “the roof of the world”, that goes up to 7 000 meters. Only one road crosses the Tadjik country, the Tashgurkan province. The Karakul (« black lake » in Turkish) was given this name by the Chinese, in the frame of the “Turkeyzation” of the Persian names adopted by the Tadjiks. This lake, source of water for the neighbouring populations, is a haven of welcome for the travellers spending a night in the yurte-hotel.
