Mzansi: an Internet Café to bridge the digital divide

 

 
On 17 March 2006, the Mzansi Internet Café opened in Tembissa, South Africa.
The project was co-sponsored by Alcatel and Telkom, the largest communications services provider in Africa.The main focus of this Internet Café is to bridge the digital divide between the first and second economies of South Africa. It is also intended to create employment opportunities for people from historically marginalised backgrounds.

The opening was attended by more than 200 people including Peter Vundla, and Linda Khumalo, respectively Chairman and CEO of Alcatel South Africa together with various dignitaries such as his Royal Highness Prince Philippe of Belgium and Roy Padayachie, Deputy Minister of Communications of South Africa,. Locals, pupils of the Endulwini Primary School in Tembisa and journalists also attended the event.

The main purpose of the Internet Café will be to provide the local community with services ranging from Internet Access to telephone and faxing facilities. All the equipment has been donated by Alcatel and Telkom: twenty computers, with the latest technology and a high speed connection, high powered photocopying machine with scanning abilities, printers for both graphics and general use and laminating equipment.

The Internet Café, located five minutes walk away from Endulwini Primary School, will also offer to their pupils free access for several hours a day.

The opening of this cyber café is part of Alcatel’s corporate social responsibility strategy and its commitment to a more inclusive information society.
