The main element of Alcatel's and Fujitsu's HSDPA demonstration system in Paris consists in a real-life 3G/HSDPA Node B provided by Fujitsu according to the same specifications as the ones defined by NTT DoCoMo in Japan.
This real Node B is accompanied by two simulators: one that simulates a HSDPA RNC (Radio Network Controller), and one that simulates a HSDPA handset. As the intelligence and sophistication of HSDPA is located in the radio access equipment (i.e., the Node B), this configuration is well-suited to assess the real-life performance of this key radio element.
In addition, laptops are used to feature, on one hand, a traditional 3G user's experience, and one the other hand, a 3G/HSDPA user's experience.
The main demonstration allows visitors to experience themselves the increased speed and ease-of-use offered by HSDPA (compared to traditional 3G) when it comes to viewing a movie picture or a video. Obviously, the data throughput achieved by the HSDPA system makes the mobile watching of a video a totally different user's experience!
The same system also allows to simulates an HSDPA communication inside a vehicle moving within the HSDPA cell at speeds ranging from 30 km/hr to 120 km/hr, thus anticipating the viewing pleasure of a passenger watching a video at the back of a car on a high-speed way, for example. |
